How To: Use Your Mobile Phone as a Webcamera

18 May 2009 1,056 views 2 Comments

If you own a mobile, which has a decent camera as well as a Symbian Series 60 operating system, you can very well use it as a web camera, saving you money from investing in a expensive web camera. The guys at WareLex, have come up with this awesome application that runs on all symbian series 60 mobile phones, which enables the camera in the phone itself to behave as a live video feed to your computer, via multiple connectivity options like bluetooth, wi-fi or even a simple USB cable.

The application, better known as Mobiola® Web Camera 3, allows the users to seamlessly interface their good high quality mobile phone cameras [now ranging from 5 Megapixels to even higher] to take over their worthless 1.3 Megapixel or lower webcameras and even slower at times. The application site reports the following features that the application itself has to offer:

  • Transforms your mobile phone into a high-quality PC webcam.
  • Connects mobile phone to PC using USB, WiFi (select models) and Bluetooth connectivity.
  • BlackBerry Storm supported (USB connection).
  • Wi-Fi support for BlackBerry phones.
  • High Video transmission speed.
  • Screen Capture functionality, when device screen can be demonstrated on PC real-time.
  • Cool video effects. Have fun and impress your friends!
  • Works with Skype, Yahoo, YouTube, MSN, AOL IM, ICQ and many others as standard USB webcam.
  • Compatible with Symbian S60 and UIQ, Windows Mobile 5 and 6, Blackberry.

The company provides a free-to-use trial version of the application for 7 days and you can purchase the application itself for a reasonable $19.95. Buy it if you really need to get rid of those beastly useless web-cams. The installation and setup of this application is easy enough. Follow the steps given below:

  1. Fire up the application from your application menus [After installing it]
  2. Choose the type of connection you would prefer between to and fro your mobile and PC [Bluetooth, USB or Wi-Fi]
  3. You have the option of choosing the video-calling camera [the one in the front/face of the phone] or the standard camera [the one at the back].
  4. The computer will detect the camera as a Addon webcam and will start streaming video seamlessly.
  5. Enjoy your brand new webcam, using nothing but your own mobile phone! Nifty huh!
