Microsoft’s New iPhone Competitor – The Pink Smartphone

28 April 2009 938 views One Comment

New rumors have broken out on the internet, with the news of Microsoft launching the iPhone competitor. Here’s what the top tech news reporters on the web had to say about this:

The Boy Genius Report

Just what the world needs… Another iPhone killer. If the Wall Street Journal’s report is to be believed, it looks like that USA Today story may have omitted a relatively important detail regarding Verizon’s “iPhone” offering — it might not be an iPhone at all. Citing an apparently different group of “people familiar with the matter,” the Journal indicates that Big Red is currently in talks with Microsoft regarding a project with the codename “Pink”. Pink will be a Microsoft-designed iPhone rival with a multimedia focus and, undoubtedly, a big touchscreen. According to the report, Microsoft’s iPhone-alike will also feature a tweaked version of the Windows Mobile OS with “new software capabilities.” While Microsoft is said to be involved with the design of the phone, a third party will build it. What do you think guys — can Pink possibly tide you over until an LTE iPhone drops?

It’s crazy, we know. Just hours after hearing shockingly believable whispers that Apple’s white-hot iPhone 3G could be sashaying over to Verizon Wireless, in flies a Wall Street Journal report asserting that the suits in Redmond are (also?) in talks with America’s largest carrier. ‘Course, we’ve heard rumors that Microsoft was banging out a smartphone behind closed doors for centuries now, but much to our chagrin, there’s no mention of “Zune” in “Project Pink.” Instead, we’re told that said handset is a touchscreen-based multimedia phone that will aim to extend the Windows Mobile OS while “adding new software capabilities.” Not surprisingly, the article also mentions that Windows Marketplace would be front and center on the phone, and potentially most interesting is this tidbit: “a third-party is expected to make the device.” Hey HTC — seen any strange calls originating from the 425?

Will this be the final iPhone killer? Or yet another failure at that? All we need now is to wait and watch what Microsoft can do. The war over the Mac vs. PC has never ended, lets see if this churns out a winner. Only Time will tell, a wise man had said once.
