Mozilla Planning to Launch Addon-Store in 2010

With the growing demand and development over the Google Chrome and Chrome OS projects, Mozilla has started to finally feel the heat of the competition. With only open-source developers at hand, Mozilla had been battling head-on for a long time against giants like Microsoft (Internet Explorer) and Google (Chrome). With funds pouring in only from donations, Mozilla lacked the capital to further improve the behemoth browser with the speed similar to Google implemented for Chrome.

foxAt the Add-on-con conference, Justin Scott, the Addons product manager announced that Mozilla, would be opening up a marketplace (online, of course) for the Firefox Addons, by 2010. This marketplace is designed to plumb in some capital for the organization and need not depend only on donations. The idea is still on the drawing board and has not yet been given out in full discussions-spree. Till date, Mozilla has not permitted a “sale” of any addon yet. Only donations were accepted, that too, specified amounts. This marketplace would be quite contrasting to the fact that Mozilla is supposed to be an opensource organization. I guess “money IS everything”.
